Authorities have now cleared the roadway following a tragic vehicular incident that resulted in a fatality.

LAYTONVILLE, CA, July 1, 2023 – A severe traffic accident occurred early this morning on Highway 101, north of Laytonville, which led to the temporary closure of the roadway. The incident tragically resulted in a fatality, according to reports from Highway Incident Command (Highway IC).

At around 5:32 AM, a vehicle was reported to have plunged 100 feet over an embankment at mile marker 75.30 on Highway 101. Initial responders on the scene noted they were unable to hear any occupants in the vehicle. The specific type of vehicle involved in the incident has not been disclosed.

By 6:18 AM, authorities had requested a tow truck for the vehicle recovery operation, which was located approximately 100 feet over the embankment. A flatbed truck was recommended for the task due to the unknown condition of the vehicle’s tires.

A medical emergency ensued at around 6:20 AM, as a person ceased breathing after being extricated from the vehicle. Emergency services immediately requested a Sheriff’s unit at the scene to respond to the developing situation.

Unfortunately, despite best efforts from emergency personnel, a fatality was confirmed. As a reminder to the public and out of respect for the privacy of the affected family, the identity of the deceased is not released until the next of kin has been duly notified.

As of 8:38 AM, the roadway was reported as clear and traffic flow restored. The detailed circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
