Re: Mendocino County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Awarded $9,368,147
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) announced the awarding of $430,000,000 in Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) Round 5: Crisis and Behavioral Health Continuum Grants. This essential funding provides grants to construct and expand facilities providing crisis and behavioral health (mental health and substance use disorder) services to vulnerable Californians of all ages, including Medi-Cal beneficiaries.
Behavioral Health and Recovery Service (BHRS) was notified of a $9,368,147 award on June 23, 2023. Mendocino County is one of 33 projects to improve California’s crisis and behavioral health infrastructure awarded BHCIP Round 5 funding. The funding will offset Whitmore Lane Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) costs. DHCS received a total of 118 applications requesting over $2 billion in funding, which far exceeded the total amount of funding available.
BHRS Director Jenine Miller, Psy.D. stated, “Behavioral Health & Recovery Services is honored to have been chosen as one of the grantees for Round 5. The award of these grant funds brings vital funds into the County to allow for the development of a Psychiatric Health Facility, allowing residents the option to be treated within our community and enhancing our local continuum of care”.
Once completed, the PHF will provide a safe and therapeutic environment for clients experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms. The goal is to deliver intensive mental health psychiatric treatment services to assist in the stabilization of the client’s condition through a program designed to stabilize the current crisis and assist the client’s return to
a less restrictive setting. Services shall include a well-developed recovery-oriented treatment program that provides a safe and secure environment to pursue wellness and recovery, with appropriate professional staffing, on a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) day a week basis.
The PHF will fit into our existing system of care. Other programs in the current behavioral health continuum of care include Crisis Residential Treatment, Medical Respite, Crisis Respite, Dual Response Mobile Crisis, Mobile Outreach and Prevention services, supported housing programs, outpatient services, early intervention and prevention services. As one of the highest levels of care available in the County, the PHF will collaborate closely with the other levels for prevention and step-down pre and post-hospitalization.
