ATV Rollover Incident in Hopland Results in Multiple Injuries and a Confirmed Fatality

In a distressing event that took place off McNab Road in the 4000 Block of Young Creek Road, Hopland, an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) rolled over leading to serious injuries and a fatality. The tragic accident, which unfolded at 5:10 PM on July 1, 2023, involved three patients, including a toddler. Authorities have confirmed one death at the scene, with details being withheld until the next of kin is notified.

Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, where responders had to navigate challenging terrain to reach the victims. Among the first on the scene, CDF was attempting to discern the exact location of the incident. Ukiah Fire was reported to have stopped a vehicle as they continued their response.

A Sonoma County Air Ambulance was on standby with an estimated ETA of 12 minutes, while additional ground ambulance support was called in due to the severity of the injuries. According to the Incident Commander (IC) at 5:29 PM, there was at least one patient with major injuries. To assist with the situation, a REACH flight check was requested (REH1).

A helicopter landing zone (LZ) was quickly established near McNab Ranch due to the remote location of the accident. By 5:38 PM, both aircraft had a clear landing path in a large opening. However, communication difficulties occurred while coordinating the rescue, leading to the location of the LZ being moved.

By 5:50 PM, first responders had arrived at the scene and were preparing to give a report. Confirmation of CHP’s (California Highway Patrol) arrival and an update on the fatality came at 6:07 PM, shortly before the Sonoma County air ambulance was called off.

Authorities waited for the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) to arrive at the location at 6:09 PM, and by 6:13 PM, the Sonoma County 1 had been canceled at the scene and was departing southwards.

This tragic event underscores the potential dangers associated with off-road vehicles like ATVs, especially in challenging terrain. It also demonstrates the importance of proper safety measures and the incredible response times of emergency services in such remote locations.
