Emergency services rushed to severe single-vehicle incident with one fatality confirmed
A fatal traffic incident occurred south of Ukiah at the intersection of HWY 253 and HWY 101 at approximately 9:37 AM on July 16, 2023. The incident involved a single vehicle that veered off the road.
Emergency services received the alert at 9:39 AM, with the vehicle initially not visible from the roadway. According to a witness report, the vehicle had been swerving in its lane before leaving the roadway.
At 9:46 AM, due to the extensive damage to the vehicle, a tow truck was requested. The vehicle, located off the southbound lane of HWY 101, was accessed via Talmage.
An air ambulance was initially requested to Ukiah Airport at 9:48 AM. However, by 9:51 AM, the air ambulance request was canceled. One fatality was confirmed on the scene at 9:50 AM as emergency responders were still assessing the condition of a second occupant.
The Sheriff’s Office was asked to respond at 9:49 AM. Updates regarding the incident, including the status of the second vehicle occupant, will be provided as they become available.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution while driving near the HWY 253/HWY 101 intersection due to ongoing recovery operations.
