Residents urged to take extra precautions as authorities intensify search efforts.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is currently engaged in an extensive manhunt for Jasen Dwain Coley, a suspect in a fatal shooting incident that took place in McKinleyville on the evening of July 3, 2023.

Coley, a 26-year-old male, is wanted in connection to the fatal shooting that occurred outside a residence located on the 2200 block of Silverbrook Court. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at about 5:25 PM and discovered an adult male at the scene with a fatal gunshot wound.

Reports suggest that Coley had fled the scene shortly after the incident. The authorities were alerted by residents in the Hiller Park area about a suspicious person matching Coley’s description. Despite a widespread search, which included air support from the California Highway Patrol, Coley remains at large.

Coley is described as a white male, around 5 feet 8 inches tall, heavy-set, with brown hair and eyes, and facial hair. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, dark pants, and a light-colored hat. He may be in possession of a rifle or a shotgun. Additionally, he might be associated with a dark blue 2016 Hyundai Elantra bearing the Tennessee license plate # 015BKGM.

As the search for Coley continues, McKinleyville residents are advised to remain vigilant, lock all doors, and refrain from opening doors to strangers. Any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to the Humboldt County Sheriffโ€™s Office at 707-445-7251, ext. 0.

The case is still under investigation, and the identity of the deceased has been withheld pending notification of the next of kin. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office assures that more information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate.

Despite extensive search efforts, including air support from the California Highway Patrol, law enforcement was unable to locate Coley.
