UPDATE: July 2nd, 2023

Tragedy struck Mendocino County on the evening of July 1, when an urgent call for a missing 5-year-old was received. Despite the rapid response and tireless efforts of emergency services, the young child, who had been swept down the river, tragically lost her life.

In an official statement by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant J. Wells (#2420) provided details of the incident. The distress call was received around 8:25 PM, from the vicinity of the 34000 block of Etsel Ridge Road in Covelo, California.

Private citizens located the child and promptly commenced life-saving measures. Emergency services, responding Code 3 (lights and sirens), took over the resuscitation efforts upon their arrival. Regrettably, despite these immediate and sustained interventions, the child did not survive.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the potential dangers of natural water bodies and the importance of constant vigilance, particularly with young children. The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case and will release further information as it becomes available.

The thoughts of our entire community go out to the family and friends of the little girl lost in this tragic event. It is a sobering reminder of how quickly a situation can turn from a routine day into a heartbreaking event.

We express our deepest condolences and urge our community members to support each other during this difficult time.

Tense Night Near Covelo: CPR Continues for a Rescued Child, as all Missing Persons are Accounted for

Saturday night witnessed a distressing series of events unfolding in Mendocino County. The peaceful evening was disrupted by a sudden call for agency assistance, rapidly transitioning into a search and rescue operation in the vicinity of Covelo. The starting point was set at the Black Butte Store, with the rescue operation launching at 8:43 PM.

As the night deepened, the situation grew increasingly tense. Emergency services and law enforcement found themselves caught up in a fervent search for the missing persons. By 9:40 PM, a glimmer of hope emerged as the updates confirmed that all missing individuals had been located.

However, amid the wave of relief, a somber piece of news surfaced. One of the rescued individuals, a child, was in critical condition. The gravity of the situation rapidly escalated as emergency medical personnel initiated immediate CPR. Concurrently, an air ambulance was dispatched with an estimated arrival time of 45 minutes. Amid the tumultuous scenario, a distraught father posed a severe threat, exacerbating the tense atmosphere.

Nevertheless, the threat did not deter the emergency responders who doggedly continued their life-saving efforts. At 9:33 PM, CPR was still being administered, REACH 80 – the air ambulance – was closing in with a 20-minute ETA, and officers from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office had arrived on the scene.

Following updates continued to underscore the gravity of the incident as the scene remained unsecured due to imminent danger. Despite these hurdles, the steadfast commitment of the medical team never wavered as they continued to deliver emergency care.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, subsequent reports indicated that the air ambulance had vacated the area without ferrying any patients, even as CPR efforts on the ground persisted. The reason for this decision remains uncertain.

As of 10:39 PM, all Forest Service personnel had exited the incident site, marking the conclusion of a harrowing night near Covelo.

This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
